On admission, he was emotionally unstable, and displayed emotional outbursts, crying and laughing uncontrollably. Besides sleep disorder, he was aggressive and irritable, and had poor nutrition. After admission, he was diagnosed with onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

During his inpatient stay, an individualized treatment plan was formulated combining Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. Western treatments worked on improving cognitive function, nerve nourishment, and brain cell metabolism. While in traditional Chinese medicine, differentiate syndrome with Chinese remedies and cipher prescriptions were used to invigorate blood circulation, remove meridian obstruction, pacify mind, and promote cognitive ability.

After a two-month treatment, the patient’s emotional state stabilized. He was able to mange self care and communicated appropriately. Despite his irregular sleep pattern, his irritation, incoherent speech, aggressive behavior and uncontrollable crying and laughing dissipated. He also regained his regular diet pattern.
